Unfriended Trailer Analysis

This is the trailer for the horror movie "Unfriended". The Unfriended trailer has multiple genre indicators to show it is a horror film. For example in the trailer we can hear that the music suddenly changes when we see a message from an anonymous person pop up saying "Guess who?" this suggests that this will be a big turning point in the movie and shows that this is when all the mayhem starts. We can also see the stars of the movie crying and screaming, this is generally seen in horror movies to show something scary is happening to them or to show death which we also see in this trailer. The last genre indicator shows one of the stars dying from whoever is terrorizing them, we usually see one of the characters die or even all of them die in horror movies to make these movies more chilling and people like the thrill of being scared. In the trailer we see reviews popping up on screen one of them says "A new genre of Horror" This suggests that this movie is the start of a whole new scary movie and it will be something we have never seen before. Putting reviews in the trailer make the viewers want to watch this movie, this is because they will feel that if these review only companies/magazines like the movie they maybe they will enjoy it too.
Tzvetan Todorov’s Theory of Narrative suggests that in every movie there is a equilibrium, a disruption, recognition of the disruption and finally return to the equilibrium. This trailer shows exactly this very well as at the beginning of the trailer they seem like a normal group of friends planning a trip, this is showing the equilibrium as we are seeing a normal life, but as Tzvetan Todorov’s Theory of Narrative shows there must be a disruption. In the trailer the disruption is shown well as the disruption is this evil hacker/glitch who causes mayhem to find out who posted a video. The disruption starts with a unknown person on the call but when they cannot kick the caller they start to get worried and get even more terrified when this caller starts sending messages. The recognition isn't usually needed in horror movies and this is no exception as it is obvious recognizing what is happening. We do not get too see the restoration of a equilibrium but we do not usually see this part in trailers so we can see the movie and find out if there is a restoration of an equilibrium or there isn't.
The Unique Selling Point (USP) to this movie would be that the entirety of the movie takes place on a laptop screen. This is the first time this has happened in a movie and audiences will be interested to see what it is like. It only shows one persons computer screen the whole the time and that is the main character Blaire. The reason they do this is to try something new and that is all that viewers want as they feel that movies are repetitive.
The target audience for this movie would be 15-30 year olds as this age group is usually the type of age group that enjoy horror movies and get a thrill from being scared. The reason a movie like this would choose this target audience is because if they went any younger it could be too scary for the younger generation and if they went any higher they might not of made as much money as they did make.

Mr Poppers Penguins Trailer Analysis

This is the trailer for the popular comedy movie "Mr Poppers Penguins". In Mr Poppers Penguins we see proof of Tzvetan Todorov’s Theory of Narrative as at the beginning of the trailer life is normal and seems like nothing could go wrong, but as Tzvetan Todorov’s Theory of Narrative  says in every movie something breaks the equilibrium and this movie it is the package of penguins. We can tell that the penguins are the break in the equilibrium as the music changes this tells the audience that something has changed and it will cause problems. In this trailer we see the disruption in equilibrium and the recognition as Mr Popper can see the penguins and even calls animal rescue to try and get rid of them. We do not see the attempt to repair but we could suggest that the attempt to repair is befriending the penguins as we see them having fun with the kids and dancing at the end.
There are many genre indicators in the trailer towards it being a comedy. There are multiple jokes and silly things in the trailer that would make us laugh mainly aimed at the younger viewers as the movie is a PG. Casting the actor Jim Carrey immediately tells the audience that this will be a comedy movie as majority of his movies are comedy movies. You could argue that Jim Carrey is the USP to this movie as he is a well-known actor who is known for being silly and comedic. In the stereotypical comedy movie there is multiple jokes and silly scenes and we know to expect this in this movie as there are multiple scenes that are made to make us laugh. This movie could also subvert from the stereotypical comedy movie as we know the penguins cannot live with them forever and they will have to get rid of them, so we know that there will be sad scenes that are not usually in comedy movies.
The technical elements of this trailer are used very well. The camera is used well in this trailer as it shows the disruption of the equilibrium when it uses a high angle looking down on the box. The camera looking down at the box could suggest that whatever is in this package is vulnerable but will cause problems. The camera is also used well with mise-en-scene as we see the main character wearing a suit and going to work proving the equilibrium and showing he lives a normal life.
Editing is used well in this trailer as it shows the penguins causing mayhem and a lot of issues for the main character. We see the penguins messing up his house and a museum, the trailer keeps cutting between both scenes telling the audience that the penguins cause problems and aren't good but towards the end of the trailer this changes as the characters start getting along with the penguins.
Miese-en-scene is used well as at the beginning of the trailer we see the main character living a normal life wearing a suit to work, towards the end of the trailer he starts wearing cold clothes and normal t shirts and jeans this could suggest that his life completely changes throughout the movie.

Suicide Squad Poster Analysis

This is the poster for "Suicide Squad" this movie came out mid 2016 and was very successful. We get told a lot from this poster for example we can get some genre indicators just from looking at the characters and the animation. We can tell that the genre for this movie is a Action as we can see weapons these usually connote to an action movie, we can also see what looks like an animated explosion with all the characters in the cloud of smoke, this also suggests that its an action movie as explosions connote to violence and action sequences. We can also see all the main characters in the movie and the poster has split the antagonist from the protagonist. Showing all the main characters in the movie going from top to bottom we can expect who we will see more in this movie, for example at the top we see Joker (Jared Leto), Harley (Margot Robbie) and Deadshot (Will Smith) so we can expect these characters to have a lot of showtime and these be the most popular characters whereas the characters at the bottom like Killer Croc (Adwele Akinnuoye) and Slipknot (Adam Beach) would not be shown as much. The explosion of different colours on the poster makes us intrigued and look at it for quite a while. The posters main colours are purple and green this could suggest a dark side vs light side type film but as the green isn't the best colour to choose to show good it could suggest evil being good and purple showing good doing evil. All over the poster it has animations of all sorts of random things or objects, this could suggest we will see these things in the movie and they may well play an impotant part of the props. For example we can see a skull like picture, a car, a dice and a bullseye. We are left with a few enigmas from this poster for exmple why villains having to work with good guys? What do these animations mean? and What will be the main plot of this movie?

Fast and Furious 8 Poster Analysis

This is the poster for the 8th movie in the Fast and Furious franchise. We can tell that the genre is Action/Adventure and Racing as there a multiple genre indicators in this poster. A few genre indicators that we can see is the explosion behind the people, explosions connote action and a fight scene. We can also see a women in between cars about to start race, this indicates to the racing genre and also shows the adventure genre because the other picture shows them on ice, therefore they are in 2 different locations connoting to adventure. The poster also shows two cars about to race this shows that the movie is keeping its roots as the franchise started off as a racing movie with fast cars. We can also see all the main characters in the movie including the villain. Having the characters separated shows which characters will be the bad guys and who will be the good guys. This posters shows the general stereotype of an action movie because it has good vs evil showing this with the character separated.

The unique selling point of this movie is its all star cast which is why they are all shown in the poster. The cast makes audience want to see this movie as the cast have been in very big movies that audiences have already loved. We are also left with a few enigmas from this poster and ask a few questions for example why is one of the good guys with the bad guy? and why is one of the bad guys with the good guys? The title is in bold writing to make it stand out and have meaning as the title tells the story, there is also a another title but in a more faded font this could be because they want the other title to stand out. The colour of the poster is a grey/black/blue colour, this could be because it tell a sad story as the one liner says "Family no more" meaning its a sad story and might not have a happy ending.

Silence of the Lambs Poster Analysis

This is the poster of the popular horror/thriller movie "The Silence of the Lambs". From this poster we can take a guess at what the genre is as there are a few genre indicators, such as having the poster fade from white on the left to black on the right shows this is a dark film and will be scary for some viewers. We also see a skull on the moths body and the wings are fire colors this connotes to hell showing this movie is terrifying. Finally we can also see her eyes are red this connotes blood and death showing that there will be death in this movie. As a viewer i am also left with some enigmas from this poster and want some questions answered. For example the poster fades from white to black this could suggest that this women we see is a good person hence the white, during the movie she may have to do some bad to get some good hence the fade to black this makes me question what bad does this women do? Another question i am left asking is what does this moth represent? and why does it cover this women's mouth? Having this rare moth with a skull on its back could suggest death and this moth represents the death that is about to happen if we see the moth in the movie we will know someone is going to die. The final question i am left asking is why one of her nostrils bigger than the other? As the nostril is on the darker side it could suggest an evil version of her, a new person or it could suggest that the moth has something to do with her nostril, this is done on purpose and will have big significance in the film.

The title is written in red writing suggesting blood and death, the creator may have chosen to do this because it adds a scary effect to the poster and makes the viewer that little bit more interested in the movie. The colors chosen for this poster are all dark colors, such as the red writing, flame wings, red eyes and the white fade to black. Using darker colors adds to the genre indicator that the movie is a horror/thriller. The poster also has a unique selling point as it says "From the terrifying best seller" this makes the viewer want to see this movie because if it is number one it must be a good movie. The camera angle on the poster is a close up on her face this could suggest that the women is going to be important in the movie.

Jaws Poster Analysis

This is the poster for popular horror movie Jaws. This poster leaves us with a few enigmas that make us question what could happen in the movie. For example we want to know more about this shark and if it is one shark or multiple killing these people. We also question why the light is up the top and dark is at the bottom this could suggest light vs evil and suggest humans vs shark. You can also see the blood red writing suggesting there could be bloodshed in the movie this connotes action and show that this movie will be gruesome. The shark is pointed up right like an arrow pointing towards the human this suggests that sharks are targeting people and aiming to kill. The poster shows a unique selling point as it says "the terrifying motion picture from the terrifying No. 1 best seller." This makes the people want to see the movie as it shows it is very popular. The use of the adjective terrifying being used twice makes this line more effective because it makes the viewer remember the line. Showing the person swimming tells the viewer that she is the victim and that many more people are to come. It also tells us a bit about the story as we now know that the movie will be about sharks killing people. The title is written in bold and big writing to stand out from everything else in the poster it makes it the first thing we read on the poster. The shark having its mouth open and showing the teeth and darkness in the mouth connotes to how dangerous and how scary the shark is.

Robin Hood Prince of Theives Trailer Analysis

This is the trailer for the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. In the trailer we can already tell that the movie is an action/adventure movie. We can see this because of the arrow firing and the chase scenes. We can also see a love interest which we tend to see in action movies to interest the female viewers. The music helps us realize it is an action movie as it intensifies as the trailer goes on, the song also went top of the charts for 3 months running. There are multiple genre indicators in this short trailer such as the swords. The swords represent some sort of fight sequence and we will likely see close combat. Another genre indicator to it being an action movie are the war horses, the horses aren't like normal horses as they have armour on and belts filled with weapons. This connotes to chase scenes which we usually see in action movies. The generic action movie shows car chase scenes and the weapons are usually guns but this shows the same things but in its own old fashion way, instead of cars we got to see horses and instead of guns we got to see swords, it gave us a taster into something new and it paid off as the movie was a big hit. A few other genre indicators are the blood and gore we see in this trailer, blood usually connotes to an action movie as the characters fight most of the duration of the movie.
Towards the end of the trailer we are left with a few enigmas such as why are these people fighting in the first place? Who is the main antagonist? We are left with these questions so we can watch the movie and answer the questions. The USP would be the actor Kevin Costner the reason for this is because Kevin Costner is a really popular actor and audiences would have seen his movies before and would know that they are usually good and popular movies.
