Evaluation Task - Codes and Conventions

For our media production we decided to do 2 genres, we wanted the main genre to be Sci-Fi and the sub genre to be Horror and we have expressed these two genres across all 3 productions. Our first production was our movie trailer it wasn't easy to express both genres in our trailer but there are multiple ways this is shown. Our second production is a magazine cover it was harder to show both genres in our magazine but we feel we have done a good job of indicating at both to the audience. Our last production was a poster, the same as the magazine it was another challenge to express both genres but we feel we have indicated well at both genres and tried to expressed one more than the other to intrigue the audience.

Our first production: Carnage Movie Trailer. We have shown in multiple scenes the genres that will be show in our movie. Such as in this snip to the left shows a spaceship hovering over earth. This feeds to the genre sci-fi, doing this scene was a challenge but we feel it was much needed as it indicates to the sci-fi genre. Spaceships are usually a popular indicator the sci-fi genre and whenever it is seen the audience could recognize that it is or will be a sci-fi movie.

Another snip from our movie Carnage indicates to the Horror sub genre. In this snip we see the protagonist attacking a zombie which will be the antagonist. Zombies are one of the biggest indicators to horror movies and have a very popular fan base with the younger age group. This is why we wanted to use zombies for our movie as it is a consistently successful villain. This will obviously connote to the horror sub genre and shows the audience this movie "Carnage" will have two genres and is well indicated throughout.

Our second production: Carnage Magazine Cover. The magazine cover was difficult to show both genres but we feel we have managed to at least indicate to both genres but have definitely expressed one more than the other. As the audience can clearly see the cover is a zombie this immediately establishes the horror genre as zombies are always seen in horror films and for the over of our whole movie to be a zombie clearly indicates to a horror genre. The Sci-Fi genre isn't expressed as highly as the horror genre but we feel we have small indicators to tell the audience that it is also a sci-fi movie. Some of these small indicators being that we wanted to make this magazine look like a sci-fi based magazine hence the font used for the title "Take Two". Other small indicators are if you notice that we used other sci-fi genre themes on this magazine such as the movie "Star Wars" and "Avatar" both appearing on the poster and both being popular sci-fi movies. Another indicator to it being a sci-fi based magazine is that we used the popular actress Jennifer Lawrence, we used her for a reason as she as been in multiple popular and successful sci-fi movies such as "X-Men" and "Hunger Games".

Third media production: Carnage Poster. This is the poster for our movie and much like the magazine it also shows the zombie as the cover of our movie which immediately establishes the horror genre. We wanted to express the horror genre more than the sci-fi genre as we wanted to gain popularity as the movie was built up and horror movies, especially zombie horror movies, are very popular. Having the zombie as our cover is supposed to indicate the horror genre and also create enigmas as we wanted the zombie to be the main USP for our movie and we wanted to add all these titles pointing toward a zombie apocalypse. The sci-fi genre is not really shown in our poster but this is because we felt we had expressed this genre enough in the trailer and more than the horror genre which is why we have focused so much on the horror side for our other 2 productions.

We feel we have established both genres in all 3 productions and it is clear that the movie Carnage will be a Sci-Fi/Horror movie. To establish all the genres in all 3 productions can be proven to be quite the challenge and we did run into a few bumps and there were things we really liked but had to get rid of to make room for these scenes to effectively show the genres in our movie. We were able to manage to get over these challenges and we think we have made a good production and shown clearly our genres. Deciding to have two genres on our movie was giving us quite the challenge for the future and we knew it would be harder to express but we had this idea from the beginning and stuck to it.
